Controller-General of Prisons, Mr. Ibrahim Zakari, said his administration was working to improve on security in prison facilities in response to the security challenge in the country.
Zakari made this known at the inauguration of the NPS command Public Relations Officers in Abuja on Wednesday.
He said, “I wish to reiterate that I have not reneged on my promise to see that our prisons are secured to face the current security challenges facing the nation, provide welfare for inmates and staff and ensure proper training of inmates and relevant development of the prisons workforce.”
He said the NPS would continue to invest in proper training of staff and the inmates to grow the required manpower resources in the country.
Zakari explained that the public enlightenment unit of the service was established in order to show that the service carried out its mandate of treating offenders in accordance with the international minimum standards.
He said the new PROs were appointed to state commands in order to publicise the activities of the NPS to the grassroots and reinvigorate the public relations machinery of the service.
