The Lagos State Police Command has assured Lagos residents of a hitch-free yuletide and New Year celebrations.
It said security had been beefed up to protect lives and property in the state during the festive season.
A statement by the state government on Thursday said Commissioner of Police, Mr. Umar Manko, who gave the assurance after Wednesday’s Security Council meeting, said the police, which ensured security during the recently concluded National Sports Festival in the state, would also ensure peace in the Christmas and New Year season.
Manko said, “Our officers and men who ensured safety and peace during the National Sports Festival are still on ground. They are alert and will ensure that the festivities coming up this period are hitch-free. Police will maintain the same level of security that ensured a peaceful sports festival.
“We are going to do that not only for the Christmas and New Year but beyond it. We assure Lagosians that adequate security measures have been put in place. So, they should feel free to go about their activities during the period.”
Those with the Police Commissioner at the briefing were Commander, 9 Brigade, Nigerian Army, Ikeja Cantonment, Brigadier General Pat Akem; Commanding Officer, NNS Beecroft, Apapa, Navy Commodore Martins Njoku; Commander 435 Base Services Group, Nigeria Air Force, Wing Commander Gbolahan Oremosun; and the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Security, Major Tunde Panox (Retd).
