Market gains deepen as index rises by 0.5%

Equity trading activities on the Nigerian Stock Exchange continued on a positive note on Thursday, with major indicators recording significant appreciation.

Specifically, the NSE All-Share Index rose by 0.5 per cent or 149.34 basis points to close at 27,663.52 points up from 27,514.8 points at which it closed on Wednesday.

Similarly, the market capitalisation of the listed equities, which opened at N8.791tn rose by N48bn or 0.5 per cent to close at N8.839tn.

A total of 21 shares appreciated in price  while 23 stocks recorded price depreciation at the close of activities on Thursday.

Airservice and Logistics Plc led on the gainers’ table, rising by 9.79 per cent or 32 kobo to close at N3.59 per share from N3.29 per share at which it opened for the day.

Nigeria Breweries Plc followed on the chart, rising by 5.84 per cent or N8.94 to close at N162 per share while Cement Company of Northern Nigeria Plc gained 4.9 per cent or 27 kobo to close at N5.68 per share.

Other price gainers included Eterna Plc, which gained 4.9 per cent or nine kobo to close at N1.90 per share and Oando Plc which rose by 4.9 per cent or 63 kobo to close at N1.90 per share.

On the other hand, DN Meyer Nigeria Plc led 22 other stocks on the losers’ chart, shedding 9.69 per cent or 22 kobo to close at 2.05 per share.

Skye Bank Plc followed dropping by 6.32 per cent or 27 kobo to close at N4 per share, while FBN Holding Plc lost 5.34 per cent or 88 kobo to close at N15.60 per share.

Livestock Feeds Plc and MRS Oil Nigeria Plc also lost five per cent each to close at N1.33 and N23.76 per share in that order.

The Financial Services sector was the most active sector of the day as a total of 205.84 million shares, worth N2.473bn were exchanged by investors in 2,122 deals.

Activity in the shares of Zenith Bank Plc, Diamond Bank Plc, Guaranty Trust Bank Plc and Access Bank Plc drove volume in the sub-sector.

In all, investors exchanged 464.233 million shares, worth N3.7bn in 4,877 transactions, compared to N413.34 million shares, valued at N4.012bn exchanged the previous day, in 4,939 deals.
