Education Advocacy of Nigeria has accused the Acting Rector, Osun State College of Technology, Mr Oluyemi Oke, of scheming to be confirmed as substantive rector.

The group, in a statement on Saturday, also said Oke should not be appointed because he is 60 years old.

But the rector, who spoke to our correspondent on the telephone, dismissed the allegation, saying he turned 60 on August 1, 2012.

He said, “I turned 60 on August 1, 2012. From the 1st of June, 2012 the Osun State Government approved the elongation of service period for academic staff. This is what I am enjoying. I have flouted no law.”

The state government had in June 2012, approved an elongation in the year of service of academic staff from 60 years to 65 years.

This is in line with the policy of the Federal Government, approving 65 years as retirement age for government polytechnics, colleges of education and colleges of technology.

Oke acted as rector between 2001 and 2002.

Various interest groups have begun intense lobbying for the post, following an advertisement by the state government last year.

No fewer than eight candidates are in the race.

Oke and one other official of the institution as well as  six candidates from outside the institution are said to be  in the race.
