The Lagos State House of Assembly has stressed the need for a law that would regulate the activities of bakers and caterers in the state.

It therefore urged the state Master Bakers and Caterers Association to come up with a bill on activities of the body.

A statement on Monday stated that the Chairman, Committee on Health Services, Mr. Suuru Avoseh, gave the advice during a meeting between the committee and the association.

Avoseh said, “It is the wish of the government that activities of every group, association or organisation are regulated according to law of the state.

“Once you bring your bill, necessary efforts would be made to ensure that the  proposed bill is passed into law in a good time. All necessary inputs within the ambit of the law would be used to ensure that the bill is passed.”

The lawmaker noted that since the Assembly was the eye of the masses, it was duty bound to make laws that would improve their standard of living in the state.

Earlier, Chairman of the association, Mr. Jacob Adejorin, said the body would soon propose a law that would be of international standard in strict compliance with health regulations in the state.

He said when the bill was passed into law, it would assist in checking the menace of quack bakers and make food safer and hygienic.

Adejorin said, “For instance, the law would ban the use of harmful substances in the production of bread, especially in Lagos State.

“There are bakeries in the state that operate in a very dirty environment hence, when this is bill passed, it would tackle the menace.”

Adejorin added that the association had over 2,000 registered bakeries and registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission in 1956.
