The holographic trend is a fashion phenomenon that has already exploded, making it the hottest in 2013! In fact, the Spring 2013 runways gave a full-fledged display of this newest trend.
One of the first fashion houses to display a collection laden with holographic items was Blumarine’s delightfully tongue-in-cheek and ultra-modern ready-to-wear Fall/Winter Collection for 2012. The models quite literally dripped in shiny synthetics and the feel was sort of futuristic punk.
Other designers like Burberry Prorsum, Jonathan Saunders, and Proenza Shouler presented collections containing shiny, reflective pieces in a myriad of unique colours and textures.
A surefire way to give your wardrobe a fashion-forward spin, already, handful of stylish celebs are embracing holograms too. Kate Moss was spotted carrying a hologram bag from Stella McCartney’s Resort 13 collection while shopping in Paris last month. Opting for a touch more sheen, German actress, Eva Padberg, turned up at the GQ Men of the Year awards in Berlin wearing a teal dress with a hologram belt and strap.
No hologram story is complete without mentioning the look Kate Bosworth wore to celebrate her new role as SK-II ambassador in Australia early last month. The actress quite literally shone in a Stella McCartney sequined dress from the S/S 13 collection paired with a Proenza Schouler gold metallic clutch and Giuseppe Zanotti glitter sandals.
As if to put an official stamp to this trend, British fashion heavyweight Burberry Prorsum presented a Spring/Summer 2013 Collection, which celebrated metallic colour and high-sheen fabrications.
The reason for the sudden obsession is simple. The designers said they saw the iridescent, rainbow-like sheen on everything from puffy outerwear to chic party clutches and simply love the look.
To them, this resurgence of holograms is perfect keeping with the season’s sci-fi trend, as the kaleidoscope of colours change with every move and lend a hypnotising, futuristic look to your daily ensembles.
Since holographic pieces are so bold, it is important to pair them with items that are more neutral. Style them as you would metallics – they look great against black or white, and you can also pair them with jewel tones for a luxe look. If you are testing out the waters with this trend, try a shimmery holographic clutch as an accent piece to your favourite dress or jeans and a tee.
For a more daring dive into the trend, a pair of holographic skinny jeans or a shiny, structured shift dress will have the head-turning effect you are looking for.
