Youths said to be members of Orlu for Greatness, on Wednesday took their protest against Governor Rochas Okorocha to Uli, Anambra State where Governor Peter Obi presented cheques to missionary schools.
The protesters, allegedly from the Catholic Diocese of Orlu in Imo State, said they wanted Okorocha to emulate Obi by supporting faith-based schools.
Some of the placards they carried read, ‘Gov. Rochas do for our bishop what Gov. Obi is doing in Anambra State by repairing our schools’; ‘Rochas, please collaborate with the church as your brother is doing in Anambra State’; ‘Gov Obi, we love you, tells your brother, Rochas to follow your footsteps.’
However, Obi’s advance team frustrated the protest before he got to Uli Boys Secondary School for the cheque presentation.
Obi presented cheques to the Bishop of Orlu, Most Rev. Augustine Ukwuoma, for the rebuilding of collapsed school structures.
Though Uli is a border town with Anambra State, it falls within the jurisdiction of the Catholic Diocese of Orlu.
The bishop accompanied by emeritus Bishop of the Diocese, Most Rev Gregory Ochiagha, the traditional ruler of Uli, Igwe Damian Onyekaonwu and other prominent members of the town, thanked the governor for building a “promising future for our children”.
The bishop, who traced the decadence in society to government takeover of schools, noted that with the return of the schools, proper training of human beings had begun.
Obi also visited Anglican Girls Secondary School, Nnewi and Oraifite Grammar School where he gave N20m cheques to the Anglican Bishop of Nnewi, Rt. Rev. Godwin Okpala for the running of the schools.
