Water is the enemy of any electronic device, and the iPhone is no different. If you accidentally drop your iPhone into a puddle, the toilet or a sink, or if you get it drenched in a rainstorm, you may need to get it replaced.

But before you spend thousands of naira on a replacement, there are various steps you can take to dry your phone, and doing so may return your phone to normal operating condition.

Speedy action is critical when your iPhone gets wet. The faster you can dry it, the more likely you’ll be able to restore power. Don’t attempt to launch any programmes to see if the phone works. Immediately power down the phone and leave it turned off, ideally for a couple of days. Remove any cables, covers or accessories to dry the iPhone before the internal components are damaged. Turn the phone so that the headphone jack is pointing down and gently shake out any drops of water.

Don’t turn it on

If you’re iPhone is drenched, the first thing you want to do is remove it from the water source. Water usually will cause the phone to turn off. After you remove it from the water, do not turn it on. Water and electricity are a bad combination, and turning your iPhone back on after its been drenched can cause it to short circuit, which may lead to irreparable damage.

Hand dry

After you’ve removed your iPhone from the water source, do your best to dry it. For instance, shake your phone and try to get out any water that might have made its way inside. Also, hand dry it with towels. Finally, take a hair dryer to your phone in an effort to rid any excess water that you couldn’t get out using towels or shaking it.

Other drying methods

When your iPhone comes in contact with water, your goal should be to draw all moisture out of the phone as fast as possible. And while hand drying methods may be all you need to do based on how soaked your phone is, there are other methods you can try. For instance, place your phone in a bag of dry rice and seal it. Let it sit for 24 to 48 hours. The rice should absorb the moisture. You can do the same thing with a bag of silica packets.

Other factors

If you’re able to dry your phone and it’s working again, it might not stay this way for long. It’s likely that water managed its way inside your phone, which will cause the internal circuits to rust and your phone to eventually stop working. That’s why it’s important to minimise the time your phone is exposed to water; the longer its exposed, the more likely it is to be permanently damaged. If that’s the case, you might be able to get away with just buying a new battery. If that doesn’t work, professional repair or phone replacement are your remaining options.
