Displaced Nigerians

The Federal Government on Friday began the process leading to the second phase of the rehabilitation of Nigerians displaced from the Lake Chad area of Borno State based on the judgment of the International Court of Justice.
Vice-President Namadi Sambo inaugurated the process with the setting up of a presidential committee saddled with the responsibility of resettling the affected persons, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
The committee is chaired by Governor Kashim Shettima of Borno State.
Sambo said the task of resettling the displaced persons was the business of all the three tiers of government.
“Federal Government had set up a presidential committee in 2003 to provide temporary shelter, food and medical support to the persons relocating from the affected areas, and further identify and provide permanent resettlement sites with basic facilities that can sustain them.
“The first phase of the exercise has been completed and handed over to the Borno State Government in 2007, though it was not officially commissioned,” he said.
