Rasheed Subair, Baale Yewehnu Street, Mosafejo, OLCDA, Badagry, Lagos State: Sir, permit me to draw your attention to the statement made by the Oyo State FRSC commandant recently on a radio programme that driving licence would no more be issued for young adults below the age of 25 years. I will appreciate if you can use this good medium to help verify this claim, considering the huge implications. The Federal Road Safety Corps commandant gave a singular reason of trying to prevent the issuance of driving licence to young adults in order to prevent them from obtaining licence to drive and the attendant accidents they cause on the road. First, the commandant needs to tell us the source of his statistics which indicate that young adults below 25 carry the highest risks, so stated. Second, is he referring to private or commercial drivers. Thirdly, at what age does adulthood commence, in many European and North American countries, adulthood and fracnchise commence at the age of 16. The commandant needs to be told that he will need constitutional amendment to redefine the age of adulthood, and what a young adult is allowed to do and allowed not to do. Lastly, is the man telling us that undergraduates and graduates under 25 will not be allowed to drive on Nigerian roads even if they had attained their adulthood? Your intervention in clarifying this important issue will be most appreciated. The FRSC needs to fashion out an attitudinal way of preventing accidents within this age group, if truly it is the case, rather than putting a blanket ban on young adult drivers.
