Over 100 golfers have been scheduled to participate at the Olu of Warri Championship to take place between May 7 to 12 at the Shell Golf Club in Ogunnu, Warri.
The tournament, which has a purse of N5m, is the first ranking event to take place on the course since it was upgraded in 2011.
Captain of Asaba Golf Club Daniel Mayuku said the Open is part of the efforts by Delta State Government to promote sports in the state.
Mayuku said, “There is no denying the fact that the PGA (Professional Golfers Association), has grown and the quality of its field is one of the best in Africa. In Delta we will try our best to support the development in professional golf and more so use every of our facility to aid this development.”
The professional players, who will battle for the N5m purse, are to tee off the challenge on May 7 with the first round of their 72 chase of the cash prize. The amateur round will take place between May 11 and 12.
“The fairways of Ogunnu course is quite narrow and it will be good planning for us to split the amateur round from the pros,” the PGA Tournament Coordinator Jide Bolaji said.
Meanwhile, Sunday Olapade of MicCom Golf Club and Mustafa Abdullahi of Ilorin Golf Club will be making a return at the Olu of Warri championship after taking a break from the Nigerian Tour.
