The Federal Polytechnic, Ado Ekiti has postponed its 16th convocation schedule to hold on May 25 due to the strike embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Polytechnics.

The Rector, Mrs. Taiwo Akande, announced the postponement at a news conference she addressed in Ado Ekiti on Friday.

Although the strike was called at the national level by the two unions, the rector said the Governing Council of the polytechnic arrived at the decision to postpone the convocation after a meeting with the local chapters of the unions failed to yield a positive result.

She said, “Members of the Governing Council met on Thursday for hours with the leadership of the two unions in the school and all efforts to convince them to cooperate and allow the event to hold proved futile.

“Members of the unions are vital to the convocation ceremony because they have roles to play and there is no way the event could hold without their support.

“Moreover, it was discovered that if we go ahead with the event, the security of people may not be guaranteed. There is no point putting the lives of people in danger. We have subsequently informed the minister of education on the latest development and that the event will hold at a later date.”
