NECO’s ineptitude

NECO Registrar, Promise Okpala

There is public outcry by candidates currently writing the National Examinations Council exams in Lagos especially because NECO is rescheduling examinations without adequately informing candidates of the changes; as a result, many have missed major subjects like English Language.

The subject (English) was originally scheduled for Monday, November 19, 2012, only for NECO officials to go to exam centres on Friday, November 16, to inform candidates who were present, sitting for Agric Practicals, that English Language had been pushed back to Saturday November, 17, as against Monday, November 19, and further asked them to “tell others” meaning candidates who did not register for Agric Practicals and were not present when the announcement was made.

Whatever happened to going through the appropriate channels like the radio and television stations to make a public announcement? Or at the least, sending SMS to all candidates (seeing that English is a compulsory subject) who put down their phone numbers on the forms they filled while registering for the examination?

This is gross injustice. With the prevalence of poverty in Nigeria, many parents and guardians had to cough out the money with which they spent on registering their wards, only to have NECO mess it all up for them due to its ineptitude and nonchalance.
