Delta leads in chess event

Hosts Lagos on Thursday won three medals from individual and team events at the on-going 18th National Sports Festival, but in all, Delta remains dominant.

The Delta team emerged top in the event which ended Thursday night at the Multi Purpose of University of Lagos, finishing ahead of Oyo State with four gold, one silver and two bronze medals to repeat the feat of the last edition in Port Harcourt.

Led by captain Bunmi Olape, Oyo recorded three gold and one bronze medals while Rivers State came third with two gold and one silver.

On the individual board order, Emmanuel Maduagwna of Delta won gold on board one in the male section with Aniefiok Ekanem from Akwa Ibom and Magnus Ikpiken of Cross River winning silver and bronze medals respectively on same board.

Last World Chess Olympiad debutant, Yinka Adesina of Ogun State displaced other contenders on board two just as Nonso Attoh of Anambra State and Elijah Donnak from Kebbi won silver and bronze medals.

Tosin Akinwande of Ondo State proved to be the best on board three with Robert Magamya of Adamawa and Lolo Busuyi-Adesina of Osun nest to him in order.

Oyo state picked another gold medal on board four from tactical display from Biola Akinseye and Offodochie Ogbor of Federal Capital Territory won silver and bronze in the section.
