Academic Staff Union of Nigeria Universities has withdrawn its members from the ongoing amendment to the 1999 Constitution by the National Assembly.

ASUU while faulting the review process, described it as “a charade of some sort.”

The decision to withdraw from the exercise was arrived at after the National Executive Council met at the Nassarawa State University, Keffi.

The union, in a communique by its National President, Dr. Nasir Fegge, on Tuesday, alleged that some areas listed for deliberation in the exercise had been predetermined and developed for collation even when the views of people had yet to heard.

Announcing that its decision to withdraw was based on principle, the union said it did not want to be used as a cover for legitimacy to the ongoing exercise.

ASUU said recent events had vindicated its earlier scepticism that the current constitution amendment process might just be an effort in futility.

The communiqué read, “First, the collation has been adjourned to continue at a later date even with the obvious possibility of manipulation given the character and history of the Nigerian ruling class.

“Second, some of the predetermined areas of interest have been developed for the collation even when the views of people are not yet known.”
